How do I download the time respondents spent on each question?

While the participant view shows the time spent on a single question for one respondent at a time, you can download this data point for every question and every respondent through the Data dumps export. This is a useful indicator of survey and data quality, and it lets you monitor response times systematically across all interviews.

The time spent on each question is included in the Answers to questions worksheet of the Excel export.

Step 1: Download the Excel export

Make an Excel export via the Export analyses button, and make sure you have included “Data dumps” in the export cart. Alternatively, you can export the raw data to Excel directly from My experiments.

Step 2: Open the Answers to questions worksheet

In your Excel report, go to the Answers to questions worksheet. This worksheet contains a unique row for each question, for each respondent, so you can see how long every respondent spent on every question.

Step 3: Locate the question you are interested in

Each question is identified by its ID in the additional_question_id column. You can find and confirm the ID of any question from the Questions worksheet.

To focus on a single question, filter the additional_question_id column so only that question ID is shown. For example, if the question you want to review has the ID 6698626, filter the column for that value so that only rows relating to that question remain.

Step 4: Read the time spent for each respondent

With the worksheet filtered to your chosen question, each remaining row corresponds to one respondent, identified by their participant_id. The duration column shows how long each respondent took on that question, recorded in seconds (to thousandths of a second).

From here, you can copy the filtered rows for further analysis, such as calculating average time spent, flagging respondents who answered unusually quickly, or comparing response times across your sample as a quality check.
